Know Everything About Jewellery Logistics And Secure Wedding Jewellery Shipments
As a Jewellery Influencer, I have featured diamonds, gemstones, and jewellery extensively, however, one aspect that we tend to miss which is very important is the insurance of these high-value goods.
BVC Logistics is a leading logistics service provider to the Indian Diamonds, Gems & Jewellery industry since 1960. With a presence at over 40 locations and 59 offices across India, BVC has positioned itself as the market leader for supporting the Indian precious cargo industry in meeting their logistics requirements.
Now, know the process of insuring these high-value goods and delivering them securely to your desired destinations from this detailed narrative between Prernaa Makhariaa and Harsh Arora, Business Head of BVC Logistics India.
Prernaa Makhariaa (PM): What is the role played by a Logistics company in the Gems and Jewellery industry?
Harsh Arora (HA): A Logistics company is an important intermediary which works as an “umbilical cord” involved in the facilitation of Trade & Commerce. It facilitates the trade transaction by ensuring that the product or produce is securely delivered to its destination.
PM: What is the procedure involved in the logistics?
HA: (Sighs) Well, Logistics is not so very simple as saying it. It involves a host of activities that result in the completion of a trade transaction; primary ones such as
- documentation for transportation and storage,
- physical pick-up of shipments,
- securing the shipments for safe transit,
- choosing an appropriate transit mode,
- secure delivery of the shipment
PM: What is the procedure of registering with BVC Logistics?
HA: We have a very simple and easy customer onboarding process. Our sales personnel collect the customer’s KYC documents and share a service agreement, which contains the standard services conditions and the commercials agreed upon with the customer. Soon as this is signed by both of us, a customer code is assigned in our operating system and we’re good to go ahead with their shipments.
“BVC engages in the most safe and secure operational practices in terms of vehicles, people handling the shipments, well-trained personnel, systems and other business functions that creates a very secure situation benefitting the customers.”
PM: What is the minimum cost for shipping these goods?
HA: Our tariffs are mostly custom-designed for each of our customers based on their transaction volume and other parameters. We also have a standard tariff for seasonal customers who may have one odd shipment.
PM: Can only companies, corporates register with BVC or small independent jewellers, gemstone traders, designers can hire the Logistic services as well?
HA: BVC caters and is open to servicing the entire precious cargo industry which includes large corporates in the manufacturing and retail sector of jewellery, small-medium to large independent, family-managed companies/organizations in the trade.
PM: What is the procedure and costs involved when one has to send a shipment in India and internationally?
HA: BVC’s repertoire of services spreads across domestic as well as international operations (including jewellery exhibitions). Procedures and costs, certainly, would be different for each of these service offerings.
PM: Are these shipments insured?
HA: Yes, usually customers cover their shipments under their JV policy. Therefore, the insurance percentage is between the customer and their insurance providers.
PM: How does one keep a track as to where the parcel has reached? Is there a live app?
HA: BVC has a robust operations platform which enables one to track the shipments. We have a well-trained customer service centre team which can be reached on a toll-free number for any updates by our customers. We also follow the practice of sending shipment updates to our customers by emails.
PM: When in an exhibition, ideally how many days in advance do you collect the parcel?
HA: In order to avoid any last-minute force majeure situations, we request our customers to handover their exhibition shipments at least 2 days before the event.
PM: What kind of packaging is required when packing jewellery to send in India and internationally?
HA: BVC advises customers to use metal boxes to pack their shipments, to withstand the rigors of transportation. At our end, BVC uses metal containers to over box the customer shipments ensuring there is no damage/ loss.
When asked about how they cope with the emerging competition, Harsh responded optimistically:
“BVC’s philosophy is one that accords utmost respect to competition. We believe that a healthy competition is not only good for us but for the trade as well. It keep us on our toes and ensures we do not slip into any sort of complacency in our work practices.”
PM: What is it that you offer different than other logistics companies?
HA: The very fact of such a large customer base that BVC enjoys is a testimony to the fact that we’ve been doing this in the correct manner and our esteemed customers are most comfortable and happy about the same.
PM: What is WeddingSHIP and how did you come up with this initiative?
HA: Recognising the impending need of handling and delivering the precious jewellery pieces for destination weddings, BVC has initiated a new venture, WeddingSHIP to cater to the families and wedding planners who can now travel stress-free to the venue. With this service, BVC Logistics will ensure that your jewellery is collected and transported to your desired venue securely and after the ceremony is over, it will be picked up and delivered safely at your doorstep.
